EMUNAH Walk It Off - Move It Forward
October 10, 2010

Israeli Author David Grossman at Alper JCC
October 17, 2010

From one of Israel’s leading intellectuals and political activists comes a novel of extraordinary power about family life—the greatest human drama—and the cost of war. Ora, a middle-aged Israeli mother is on the verge of celebrating her son’s release from army service when he returns to the front for a major military operation. In a fit of preemptive grief, she sets out for a hike in the Galilee, leaving no forwarding information for the “notifiers” who might bring her the worst possible news. Recently estranged from her husband, she drags along an unlikely companion: the couple’s former best friend, Avram. Once a brilliant artistic spirit, Avram has been an emotionally broken man since being held as a POW during the Yom Kippur War. Critics have called To the End of the Land a masterpiece and one of the great antiwar novels of our time. Co-sponsored by The American Jewish Committee (AJC)

Rabbi Joseph Telushkin - Jewish Book Festival
October 19, 2010

From the best-selling author of Jewish Literacy, comes a provocative biography of one of the greatest rabbis of the Talmudic era and a figure of prophetic importance to today’s world. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin’s latest book, Hillel, is a response to the unprecedented levels of intermarriage and assimilation, and to the interest of so many non-Jews in Jewish teachings. Telushkin feels that Judaism today is in need of the openness that Hillel championed 2,000 years ago. This is a bold new look at an iconic religious leader—one who was the first to cite the ethical concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world) as a basis for making modifications to Jewish law. This program is part of the 30th Alper JCC Jewish Book Festival

Joel Chasnoff - author and comedian
October 27, 2010

Joel Chasnoff is a stand-up comedian who was the opening act for Jon Stewart and Lewis Black of The Daily Show. Disillusioned with Ivy League post-graduate life, Chasnoff makes real on his dream of giving back to Israel and voluntarily enlists for one year in their Army. The lone American in a platoon of young Israelis, the author shares a hilarious coming-of-age tale with equal parts irreverence and vulnerability, irony and intimacy. He blends an on-the-ground portrait of life in one of the world’s most high-profile militaries with a poignant, thought-provoking look inward at a young man coming into his own. This program is part of the 30th Alper JCC Jewish Book Festival

Israeli Journalist Tom Segev
November 01, 2010

Simon Wiesenthal was the legendary Holocaust survivor who dedicated his life to the pursuit and punishment of Nazi criminals. A hero in the eyes of many, Wiesenthal was also attacked for his unrelenting pursuit of the past, when others preferred to forget. In this definitive biography, Segev has obtained access to Wiesenthal’s private papers, and also to secret service records which reveal the “Nazi hunter’s” stunning role in the capture of Adolf Eichmann, and his unlikely friendship with Kurt Waldheim. Tom Segev is a journalist and writes a weekly column in Ha’aretz, Israel’s leading daily newspaper.

Author Melissa Muller - Jewish Book Festival
November 03, 2010

Melissa Müller has written two acclaimed books, Anne Frank: The Biography and Until the Final Hour, both of which became motion pictures. Now, she and co-author Monika Tatzkow present their meticulously researched and enthralling story, Lost Lives, Lost Art, that details the mindless Nazi destruction of a cultivated class of wealthy German and Austrian Jews and the pillage of their great art collections. Beginning in 1933, Jewish collectors were under extraordinary pressure from German officials to surrender their art treasures in exchange for precious exit permits. The authors trace the dispersal of these collections, the fate of the collectors, and the restitution of some of the lost art.

Being Indian, Being Israeli - Jewish Book Festival
November 04, 2010

Jews have lived in India for hundreds of years and experienced little anti-Semitism, but when Israel gained its independence, thousands took the opportunity to leave their country and make ‘aliyah.” Dr. Maina Singh skillfully examines the cultural network of the 70,000-second and third generation Indian-Israelis, and shows how ethnicity, gender and class intersect with "Jewish-ness" to create their complex identities. This program is part of the Alper JCC 30th annual Jewish Book Festival.

The Three Weissmans of Westport - Jewish Book Festival
November 08, 2010

Once upon a time there were two sisters who lived in New York, one impulsive and the other smartly sensible. The sisters found love and lost love. This enchanting tale would go on, but one day quite unexpectedly, their 78-year-old father decided to divorce their mother to whom he has been married to for almost fifty years. When their mother was forced to leave her palatial Upper West Side apartment, the sisters took up residence with her in a small cottage in Westport, Connecticut, to escape the chaos of their own lives. The engaging plot takes unexpected twists and turns, as author Cathleen Schine presents a hilarious, contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel, Sense and Sensibility. This program is part of the 30th Alper JCC Jewish Book Festival.

The Arab Lobby, author Mitchell Bard
November 09, 2010

In this detailed political history, Mitchell Bard presses every hot button as he follows the Arab states and other powerful interest groups who have waged a bureaucratic guerrilla war to undermine American-Israeli relations. Bard shows how the efforts of the first Arab Lobby grew out of their alarm at the creation of the Jewish state and reveals the scope and activities of today’s Arab Lobby, “ . . . whose goal is feeding America’s oil addiction, obtaining more sophisticated weaponry and weakening our alliance with democratic Israel.” The author is the Executive Director of the nonprofit American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise (AICE) and a foreign policy analyst.
